We are excited to introduce Rebekah Kang as the latest addition to our Middle School team!
Understanding that the initial days of school can evoke a mix of excitement and nervousness, we would like to introduce Mrs. Kang and provide you with an insight into her exceptional qualities as an educator.
What excites you about teaching middle school? What do you find most rewarding about working with this age group?
I am excited about working with an older group of students who further along in their education journey. This group is fun to work with because they can do more things.
Every teacher has a unique teaching style.
Can you describe your approach to creating a positive and engaging learning environment?
My teaching style is one that incorporates activity and project-based learning in addition to textbook learning. I like to have fun in my classroom and show students that we can learn in a fun way.
St. Philip Lutheran School emphasizes a strong academic foundation. How will you create a curriculum that's both challenging and engaging for middle school students?
We will be using a variety of standards-based curriculum that will challenge students as they learn new things while incorporating hands on learning through projects, activity centers and games.
Project Power! Middle schoolers thrive on hands-on learning. Can you share some creative project ideas you have planned for the upcoming year?
We will be completing an Escape Room during the first week of school as a team building activity.
Technology plays a big role in today's classrooms. How will you integrate technology to enhance your lessons and cater to the digital-native generation?
I plan to start out the year with students creating a digital presentation to introduce themselves to the class as we will have some new students joining us this year. Also, I plan on incorporating video and music to enhance my lessons and provide opportunities for students to utilize technology when working in the classroom.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential for success. Describe how you'll encourage your students to think critically and ask questions.
I plan to encourage my students to think critically by challenging them to explain their thinking and provide evidence for support when making a claim. Also, I plan to foster a learning environment where students know that it is ok to ask questions.
Middle school can be a challenging time socially and emotionally. How will you foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that addresses the social-emotional needs of your students?
I plan on spending time at the beginning of the year discussing how we are all on the same team and that we need to foster a climate of kindness and compassion within our classroom. Additionally, I plan on using SEL books from the CLEF Dream Grant throughout the year to continue exploring a variety of social emotional topics that we all experience.
Fun Fact! Share a surprising or interesting fact about yourself that most people wouldn't know.
I first went to France on a mission trip when I was 16 years old. I worked at a Christian summer camp cleaning the cafeteria, setting the tables for meals and doing dishes after each meal.
What are you most excited about for your first-year teaching in the Middle School at St. Philip Lutheran School?
I am most excited to teach French this school year and bring my love of language learning to St. Philip. I am hopeful that the students will pick up on my excitement and see that learning another language is a unique and fun opportunity.
Come stop by and meet Mrs. Kang at Back to School Night on August 15th starting at 6 PM!
